Thanked: 8Finish is, 15-20 coats poly...
Yes, I (on the instruction from Glen) used acetone to remove the bolsters. I then, very carefully, cleaned them, and then hand polished with Maas.
After shaping and sanding to 2000 grit, I actually hand rubbed the scales to a light satin finish. Yeah that's right... just simply hand rubbed them. I think having sanded them down to the 2000 grit enabled the ease in which they rubbed out so easily.
I then put approx 8 coats of poly on the scales before attaching the bolsters with a drop of CA. After drying, I simply started applying coats of poly again. After each 2-3 coats from then on, I would (with 1500 or 2000 grit - I don't remember which) lightly sand the poly off of the surface of the bolsters. I did this on suggestion of Glen as well... the peening of the pins would probably crack or mar the poly that was on them. After the final coat of poly had cured and I had sanded it off the bolsters, I hand polished the bolsters with Maas and then assembled the blade/scales and pinned. After pinning and again hand polishing the bolsters/pins, I used spray poly to apply one smooth yet light coat over entire razor [not the blade ]. I did this simply wanting to protect the finish of the bolsters and preserve the mirror finish. That's it... 4K/8K Norton, 12K finishing stone, strop... goooood shave!
