Dorko Rescale in Cocobola
My son and I rescalled this Dorko 300 in Cocobola a few weeks ago. The scales that came with the blade were not original and very cheap. Pics are by my son, JrJoeD. Let him know what you think, he's 14 and very interested in straight shaving and restores. He is currently shaving his cheeks and mustasch w/ a str8, a DE for the rest. These pics may be better in the Dorko club forum.

Very nicely done, guys. Scales are a nice warm tone, and it looks like a nice job on the blade as well!
Very impressed, especially with a 14 year old into straight shaving and restoration - he's going to be an expert soon enough!

Looks great. Blade is nice and I like the spine a lot. The scales are really nice and well proportioned.
Did you make your own design or follow the ones that were on there before ?
The pics look excellent. Great job with the shadow box ! Given a little more time and practice and I imagine we are gonna see some amazing work coming out of that household as well as some great pictures of the work as well.
Ohhhhh yea... and i really like the attention to the details in the pins
Congrats to the family effort... well done

The finish is all natural, Just buffed up a bit
The pins are brass rod, the washers are ones that they domed themselves and jewerly findings from a local hobby shop. The did a real nice job on this one.Last edited by CarrieM; 11-24-2008 at 08:53 PM. Reason: spelling corrections

I did not use the original scales at all. I didn't like anything about them. I had an old scale I found would keep the blade in the scales when closed and was not too long or too short and traced it onto the wood blank as a general guide for the dimensions (length width and bottom edge. The final contour and the rounding og the outside 'faces' of the scales was all done free hand on a drum sander mounted on a bench grinder. CarrieM wasn't home at the time when I applied canuba (spelling) wax as a finish abd buffed them. I didn't do anything to the blade. It is as received. When needed all I do to the blades is MAAS w/ tooth pick to get the stuborn spots and rust buy the pivot. MAAS and a q-Tip to remove some tarnish and on rare occasions, a light buff. I do not want to change the geometry of the blade unless I am rermoving a frown or chips in the edge. I'll post some others JrJoeD and I restored and you will see some heavy home ware and pitting. They were between $2 and $12.50 blades we practiced our rescalling techniques on. One will be a Geneva w/ Yellow Heart, one Henckles Platinum in Lace Wood and a Magnetic in Purple heart. My shop (little as it may be) is not heated and I don't have any str8s that are crying for a rescale so that may be all we do until spring.
Thank you all for your kind words regarding our work on this project. It was fun and a great way to gain some quality time w/ a teenager.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)
