Damn!!!! it's hard to find the right words for that blade! You both did a great job, something you should be very proud of. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Now where do I get one

Randy , have you considered etching the blade.? Some steels & I think 1095 is one, display beautiful alloy banding after a few acid baths. Icing on the cake if you like the look.

    Hello,

To the best of my limited knowledge that is not the case with 1095 steel that has been heat treated and tempered using the standard methods.
Perhaps Mike Blue has some knowledge on how an alloy banding might be achieved?

Hiya. Well with my even more limited knowledge that may well be so Pretty sure the pieces I've seen were differentially hardened. Don't know if that makes a difference

As with Joe I too actually picked up this blade and it was amazing work done by Randy. It is awesome to hear Glen talk about the scales he was dreaming up as soon as he saw it, and then seeing the final product

Great work by both of you!!!

OK, now I know what your referring to. Yes, 1095 can be differentially hardened and W2 steel shows it even better. When you said alloy banding I thought you were referring to something like Wootz steel. I do plan on doing some differentially hardened blades in the near future. That will be interesting to see what is required to show the banding. I believe a mirror or near mirror polish is out of the question. Perhaps a 1000 grit finish?

With a little of the right stuff, you could have both alloy banding and show a hardening line. A little more right stuff before grinding and the alloy banding will show a manipulated pattern too. A lot of work, but it would be cool.
