Geneva Cutlery ~ SS St Louis
This 6/8, half hollow, Geneva Cutlery square point commemorates the voyage of the SS St Louis in 1939. Quite a story & worth googling.
The plan for this workhorse was rust & tarnish removal with minimal abrasives & also restore the original Bakelite scales.. if they held together. Spine wear was not addressed to optimally preserve the etch.
Tang & spine still had the original thick nickel plating but rust was bubbling thru so minimal abrasive was not an option here. 120 - 400 grit flap sanding with the dremel was followed by Scotchbrite buffing wheels & compounds.
The plating was not removed from the jimping as it was pristine.
Mark side of blade was given a couple of very light passes with 400 grit flap sander then the buffing process. Pile side of blade was sanded a bit harder.
Scales were sanded to 2000 grit & buffed to a high shine. Brass pins , stacked washers & original wedge hold it together. Brass thrust washers were added because I like what they do for the pivot action.
Tough steel... took some honing but an excellent shave test. 5 day beard gone in 3 passes & a little blade buffing on the chin. Just a perfect smooth shave.
Ships off to its owner after maybe just one more shave... after all a guys gotta enjoy his workThe white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Excellent restore! The new owner will be very pleased with your work. Geneva's are great shavers.

Thanked: 488Very good looking razor and I like the 6/8 size which Geneva made few of. I also like my Geneva razors because they hone easily, make a great edge and I prefer the longer tang you see fairly often on them. Very nice find!
