Y.A.R.F. (Yet Another Rescaled Friodur)
Here's another rescale of one of those Monster Friodur Inox scalloped-back beauties. The blade shaves like a dream as is, so absolutely no blade work was done.
I purchased it with these nice looking cracked ice scales, but they needed to go because the blade protruded from the bottom with the razor closed.
Anyway, the new scales are olivewood, finished with several thin coats of wipe-on polyurethane then two coats of Renaissance wax.
The wedge is synthetic horn, pins are brass with domed brass washers and nylon thrust washers - with one additional brass thrust washer as the blade didn't want to center properly at first. Bummer. It's fine now.
Now the blade is well protected, the balance is great, and it still shaves like a dream! I thought it was worthwhile, and I hope you do too.
I was inspired by seeing the rescale jobs many of you have done, and I think it would be great to have one place somewhere to see them all, so if you want, feel free to post a picture (or four) of your Friodur rescale!

Nice done ! Those scales look in much better proportion than the previous ones
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 151Very nice work. I have never used olive wood, but its beauty is prompting me to look at some blanks on the bay. For what its worth, I really like the simple design of the scales and the fitting of the wedge is outstanding.
Great work as usual!

Beautiful. I love that there are so many variations in the scales of these friodurs,. Everyone seems to have done something a little different, & yet they all look great!
Love the olivewood too.

Thank you all for your extremely kind and generous remarks! I appreciate your feedback, and your suggestions on how to make my work better.
I love Olivewood and am glad I finally have a razor scaled with it. I was inspired by the many beautiful examples of olivewood scales members have posted. I think you get the idea. So if my scales look familiar, or if you're thinking "Hey, I did some just like those!" remember two things:
1. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery
2. It's an homage . . . an homage.
I think most of the "high contrast woods" (olivewood, zebrawood, kingwood, black and white ebony for examples) are terrific eye-catchers, and if you can find a slab with distinctive grain, it can give even simply styled scales that extra touch of pizzazz.
I've seen examples of amboyna burl and birds-eye maple to name a couple that have knocked my socks off.
But hey, I posted this thread because I want to see your rescaled Friodurs too! Come on, this is your opportunity to show off your beauty at least one more time, as well as to inspire those bitten by the restorers bug the same way you all have inspired me. So let's post pics of those puppies!
