Default Schatt & Morgan Extra Hollow in Elk Antler

Well antler is not as easy to work with as I thought it would be. Trying to find a semi-straight piece six inches long was tough enough, then the first thing it did after I cut it was do a concave warp. I fought with the blanks for a long time before resorting to a stabilizing pin in the center of the scales and epoxy on the wedge to fill in the gaps.

The blade is extra hollow so I was forced to leave some pitting. I decided to go with it and I used the unbleached antler to give it a rustic look. I had to take off some edge material to get past the chips and pitting there, but I was left with a 32nd under 5/8 to work with (it started out around 11/16). There is still one small pit about a half inch from the toe that I just plan to live with.

Tang is etched "SCHATT & MORGAN CO" Second line "TITUSVILLE " then the pitting took out what I think should be "PA". The monkey tail is stamped "629".

Nice work. I think your choice with the unbleached antler suites the blade perfectly.

I like the rustic look. How does it shave ?

I'll get back to you on that. I still need to put it in my rotation. But considering the shape it was in it takes a keen edge.

It looks as though it was worth all the effort.

    Default First Shave with S&M

This morning I reset the bevel on the Schatt and Morgan, and I'm happy to say it was easy to get shave ready. It just took one progression through the 4k/8k pyramid and a Chromium Oxide 60k strop to pass the HHT. After a quick lather I put it to the test, and it took off a couple days growth as well as any of my nicer looking blades.

I'd say it's a good shaver even with all the rust damage it sustained. I can't wait to find an other.

    Thanks, Chris
