Thanked: 7Mounting Razors for Display
I was wondering if anyone here has any experience doing museum-quality mounting of razors on wooden plaques? I know you could glue them and that would look OK, but I want the ability to be able to remove the razor if need be, for maintenance.
Any ideas/resources would be welcome!

How about silicone caulking? It will hold it in place, but if you want to remove it, it should peel off both the plaque and the razor.

If I was to do that I would probably drill a small hole in the back board on either side of where the tang would lay. I would use a thin copper wire twisting the ends together behind the wooden board the razors were mounted to. Maybe some green felt on the back board behind the razors. I would also coat the metal with Renaissance Wax or Semichrome to protect it from corrosion. There will probably be better alternatives but off the top of my head that is what I would do.

I have felt in drawers in a machinist's tool chest filled with razors and also in drawers in an art supply storage cabinet filled with more razors. So far no problems. Machinist's chests routinely come with felt lined drawers where steel tools are stored. OTOH, they are generally oiled and those moisture absorbent packets are also a good idea.

I seem to recall an earlier "Shave Den" post on SRP 1-2 months ago where somebody built a cabinet to display their collection of str8 razors in. They used particle board on the back of the cabinet from which they installed removable U-shaped hooks on which the razors were mounted.

Thanked: 7I wouldn't use particle board. It emits formaldihyde.

Thanked: 0I don't know about musuem quality, but what about just drilling a hole into your plaque or board or case, and inserting a dowel rod of some material or other, and letting the razor hang open over the rod? Showing off the blade and scales that way.

You could also use a couple rare earth magnets recessed in the backing board. They are strong enough to hold a razor, suspended on its own. The scale would hang since it is not carbon steel but you could use a 1/8 L hook and hook the scale from the inside (hook between the two scale sides where the blade would sit), so the hanger is only holding half of the scale. That would keep it invisiable to the casual looker but you could easily remove it from the case.
That big case I made has long been filled with razors. I actually need to make a bigger case. Going to use some nice wood this time and a lighter felt backing.Last edited by cannonfodder; 03-11-2010 at 02:12 PM.
