S.W.E.E.T.... The CA finish turned out stellar, nice and smooth, and the burl has a nice pattern to it. Great job G-Bro.

Thanked: 1072Beautiful work mate. I like the fancy center spacer, did it come at exactly the right size or did you have to modify it? Nice hammer too, is that what you use for your pinning?

That is a caramel-n-cream dream of a razor. Beautiful - I love seeing all the different interpretations of the rescaled Friodur blades.
I've usually seen amboyna used with a liner for support. Is it best to have a liner in most cases? If so, then are these scales a tad thicker than usual for added strength, or would the third pin lend strength to the scales? Or am I just way off?

Thanked: 240That right there is the perfect example of why I would never be able to do work on someone else's razors. After creating something like that how do you then put it in a box and send it off never to see again? I don't have that kind of strength, (to say nothing of skill). Truely a beauty.

No your not way off, but there are a ton of "tricks" in that build
These Friodur razors are very finicky, that's part of what Max and I were talking a bit about in the first posts... Honestly I have done so many of these in Wood, Acrylics, and Horn that I have the pattern down to a science to balance, and straighten them out.. This one was an exceptionally straight one, in fact maybe the straightest I have seen...
I won't do them at all without the 3rd pin, it is almost a necessity on these to get them to sit straight, and yes they do add strength if done right...
The thickness you see is a bit deceiving because of the rounding, of the outer edges...
I use CA on Burls for the strength reason and I have a certain way of doing it to emphasize that... I have tried most every metal liner down to .005 brass and have never accepted the balance, so I go the other direction and strengthen the wood...Unbalanced razors are a pet peeve of mine..
You could also use stabilized wood but I am not that partial to the look...
If you look really close you will note that the center post fits perfectly, and the flex in the scales for strength, is not pulled out of line... (Yes Baldy I fit it very carefully with a file) that nice even flex creates strength also...
Everything combined makes these a pretty strong set of scales..
I called these "tricks" at the beginning but honestly there isn't one of them that wasn't used on vintage razors other than the CA.... I learned everyone of them from tearing apart old razors...
Hope that answers some of the questionsLast edited by gssixgun; 09-19-2010 at 04:54 AM.
