    Default Dubl Duck FAIL.

I was almost finished restoring this Dubl Duck. I brought it back from disaster. I think this is what you call Cell Rot.:Name: DublDuckrot 001.jpg

I was scaling it in Masecraft Polyester Pearl (Appropriate for a Pearlduck Dwarf).

Everything went well until I pinned the hinge. The blade was not centering, so a few more taps:

Dang. Now I gotta order more material. At least the blade is done.

Blade looks good, scales look good...

...my guess, based on the pin, is that you were hitting too hard and the force of the blow, rather than the tightness, is what cracked the scales. Make sure you're using a light hammer, or really choking up on a heavier (read 8oz) one. Many, many, many light taps will do it.

Looks like a really good job, otherwise!

I'm pretty sure it was cause I was trying to force the pin in a direction it didn't want to go. I am using a light hammer. Thanks for the input.

I have found that if the blade isn't centering, it's tricky to make it do so with the hammer. I test fit all my blades with microscrews first to try to get the centering issues sorted out ahead of time.

Welcome to the world of restoration. I think we have all at one time or another cracked a scale followed by choice expletives. Rule: Always have a little extra material.

+1 to that. I've recently started using the screws to test before pinning and its made life much easier and safer.
Could be worse mate, I think a lot of us have busted blades trying to correct alignment issues. Let us know how it turns out.

Edit: Blade looks great too BTW

Holli4, yes, I check mine first with Microfasteners too. Just didn't line up after peening the front.

That blade turned out very pretty, looking very nice with the pearl scales and red wedge. Those scales look real nice until the obvious.

Thanks for the strength to take the pics and post, including the close up. Breaking things is part of learning. In a selfish way, we get to learn by your efforts.
