Thank you all for your kind comments, gentlemen. I was expecting those scales to divide opinion, actually: subtle they aren't.

onimaru55: well, I always keep old scales, if only for patterns. These have seen better days, and there's lots of scratches and the odd chip, but they probably are worth putting to rights and reusing. The translucent pearly effect is certainly unusual, and they don't come close to some of the truly 'orrible plastic pairs in the scrap scales box.

cpcohen1945: they're glued with CA ... yes I thought long and hard about that. It doesn't seem right, but if you can't do it with plastic, I guess you just can't do it. I made a big point of getting perfectly flat finely sanded surfaces on the wedge so that the join would be unobtrusive. The design with the longitudinal ridge dictates a pinless wedge construction of course. Some time ago I did cut out a sprung "pair" of scales from a single piece of hardwood with a view to doing something along these lines, but the right razor (or customer) hasn't come along just yet. Gluing up wooden scales is a step too far for me, not sure why though given how adhesives have come along since I started in the furniture trade.
