    Default first full restoration

i have just finished doing a crown and sword razor i managed to get for £3.
I sanded down the blade by hand working up the grits from 80 to 1000 then honing. used a 1000 to set the bevel and then a 4/8k to sharpen and a chinese 12k to polish.
the original scales had to be removed, one was badly cracked and the other really badly warped. they've just been replaced with blonde plastics for the moment untill i have more cash go get some better ones.

here are some before and after photos.

    after:

as you can see in the last photo the blade etching is slightly harder to see but i refrained from giving it a mirror finish to try and preserve this aspect of the razor.

let me know what you all think, im looking forward to shaving with it tomorrow morning.

Nice clean job. This is part of what love this hobby for. Seeing a neglected "oddity" of a straight razor put back to a useful purpose. I'm certain you'll feel the same satisfaction using it too. Looks like you did right by that razor, placing it back to life.

thanks dude, im hooked now that ive done two, im constantly going into antique/second hand shops looking for new projects. only annoying thing is that i need to get scales pre-made as i cant get power tools here in my student accommodation. i think doing this to old razors gives me a stronger attatchment to them but maybe when my collection is big enough i may have to pass them on to other people.
can i just add that your scales look brilliant, are they all your own razors or do you do them for others?

Nice job and there is nothing wrong with the scales you added at all. dirtychrome pretty much said it all.

Nice work. If you have the patience and ability to hand sand a blade you don't need power tools to make scales.

very true, i suppose its probably me being a bit lazy at the moment, mixed with the fact that i'd have to do it outside because i would imagine it would get a bit messy, i may have to make a batch of scales of various sizes over the summer holidays when im back at home then bring them back here with me so i'm ready.

Get the blades ready ahead of time and match them with scales over the holidays.

    Happy sanding!
