OK, I've seen tons of cholla- and razor scales never crossed my mind. Way cool idea. First attept is not practical- well, maybe in a boot. But I would keep experimenting with it. You were creative enough to consider the material, I'm sure you could come up with something to bring oohs and ahhhs from the crowd!

Thanks for all of the nice comments and suggestions. Since it is near Easter I have attached one of my early projects with Cholla. I have made dozens for Priests and friends.

Just a thought, but on some knives i have seen the cactus used and it has been filled with clear expoxy resin. You can see all the texture but it has a smooth waterproof finish. Might be a good idea in a wet environment such as a shaving area. Trade off is you would lose the rustic look a little as it usually seems to be a gloss finish.
Love the way yours looks - just an idea.
    Respectfully,
Now THAT is a great idea!

Instead of using spar varnish use verathane it lasts better and will not allow water in to ruin your work.
