Red face King Cutter in Kauri

This one is for a Sydney local. The job was hone & rescale in N/Z Kauri . One of my favourite timbers due to its chatoyance. Seems I only get to use that word on SRP
This is a recycled wood which was used for flooring in the 1850's - early 1900's so it's at least as old as some of the Sheffied razors out there.

The Supadeluxey oil finish was chosen & a contrasting rosewood wedge was fitted. Scales had 2 light wash coats of shellac followed by a couple of coats of the 'secret' oil blend The oil was allowed time to soak in & then the hours of progressive sanding, up to 2000 grit. At 400 grit the oil creates a grain filling slurry & by the end of the process you get a patina with a sheen to rival French polish, yet from another angle its a satin finish with a 3-D view into the grain. Both the camera & the operator have difficulty capturing this.
Needless to say my pics don't do it justice.

Brass pins & washers with pins left as peined.
The original plastic thrust washers were replaced with brass for a more consistent pivot.

The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
