Throw the dog a bone
Hi All,
Picked up a very nice W&B xtra hollow ground 6/8" w/barbers notc. I had a sweet pair of cross cut birdseye maple scales laying around, so, this is what came out (of my sick mind). I'll hone it tonight and maybee list it on e-bay tomorrow if I don't fall in love @ the test shave. I'm already not sure if I can go through with the listing.

Thanked: 240Interesting, I can't say I'm a huge fan of the bone shape, but you did execute it perfectly.

Nice! Though somehow I think that razor will remain in your rotation.

Thanked: 3795This is my opinion, and you are way more than welcome to ignore it. I like the whimisical scales. I really do; but that classic razor deserves a more classic design. In my opinion those scales belong on some other razor.
You did a very nice job on the scales and I really like the wood.

I do agree with you Utopian. I, however only have vintage blades to restore available. I wanted to try something different as I have made approx. 20 razors with very classic lines which I so love. I very much appreciate your advice and opinions as I am quite new to straights. If it doesn't strop or feel right I'll replace the scales, but right now I have a great conversation piece and hopefully a great shaver. Thanks again for the input.

I agree with this. That is an extremely handsome Wade and Butcher blade, but although specific styles of razor could be made over quite a period of time, it is entirely consistent with being mid-Victorian. It deserves a pair of original-style scales, which would most likely be quite simple and slender, and of horn unless they were bone or ivory. I don't remember seeing wood which seemed to be original, in a Wade and Butcher of this age, although I doubt if it is unknown.
There are any number of straighter backed and edged twentieth century razors with a round point, which would look less out of place in scales like these. Alternatively, if a safety-razor blade were inserted as a temporary protective shim, these wooden scales could be altered to a more conventional shape without removing the pivot. It is certainly a very nice piece of maple.

While I do see Utopia's and the rest's point, I'm a super creative, always trying to do something different kind of guy. If your going to attempt to create something new and different you have to take risks. The execution was awesome. The scales look mangnificent and I can see how the barbers notch could have worked with the notch at the end of the bone shape. I applaud you for trying. Bravo.
If I were you I'd leave them on and see how they grow on me. Worst case is you get to make another set of scales. Not so bad.

I love it!!!! You decide what value it has and post it up for us here first. Don't give those ebay bums (I know, I'm one of them, so are you... heheh) first crack at it. Let the SRP boys have at it first. I'd love to give it a home, dog bones look great to me. I'm that kinda guy!! LOL.
Really, what do you want for it if you decide to sell it?-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --

Thanks Hammer,
I can't list on SRP classifieds yet as I am still a newbee too. I really don't know what to ask for it. My wife and friends think it's the coolest razor I've done yet. I'm glad it's stirring up so many opinions and emotions. It will help me with future projects. I have a beautiful 7/8" Tally Ho w/sabre point coming soon that will be very interesting. I have only worked with wood so far and have no immediate desire to work with bone or horn. Beautiful wood has always appealed to me. I also learned a lot making this. The experience will make me get better. I have a long way to go looking at the work of the guys on SRP but I'm on my way. Thanks again for the encouragement. Don.
