Thanked: 13245Dovo #105 in Turkish Walnut w/ Matching Brush
This is another collaboration between WillN and I on this matched set...
Travis/Logistics here at SRP sent the razor and two chunks of this beautiful Turkish Walnut out to me, I immediately sent one out to Will and he turned a beautiful handle out of it... When the handle got back here I made a set of scales for the Dovo out of the other piece, and used a Traditional Tung Oil hand rubbed finish on both, leaving a super high gloss finish...
The Brush was topped off with a 24mm Super Silver Tip knot from The Golden Nib...
The razor was finished up with Nickel Silver pins, and SS stacked washers, with a Black Buffalo Horn wedge...
Many Thanks to WillN once again for another fantastic brush handle...

That's a sweet looking combo and beautiful wood. Kudos and 2 thumbs up to both of you. I also love the finish on both.

OMG, that walnut is absolutely wonderul! Too bad that it is not so commonly available, very nice grain. The shape of the scales are a good match for the blade imho, nicely made. How do you make that tung-oil finish? You sand it up to ?grit, and after that you hand rub a few layers of tung oil?

Thanked: 13245
I sand to 320, wipe down with Mineral Spirits..
I then take a paper plate and pour some Tung Oil on it and match that with Mineral spirits 50/50 Use 600 grit sandpaper and dipping and sanding I apply it to the scales.. I let that dry 24 hours...
I repeat using 800 grit and a 75/25 Tung Oil/Spirits solution let dry another 24 hours...
I repeat again using 800 grit and Tung oil let dry 48 hours...
From here on I use only my fingers to apply the Tung oil which a rub in a coat every 24 hours in between each coat I "sand" with 3M Synthetic steel wool medium grade
Then for the last coats I repeat and sand with the 3M Synthetic steel wool fine grade until I end up with the look I want...
The downside of these finishes is that they take at least 1 full week to do and basically you get a finish that looks like CA but took longer The only advantage as I see it is that it gets deeper into the wood and it is rather easy to repair scratches later on...

Excellent work once again, Glen! Nice touch with the horn wedge. I believe this marks the first re-scale on SRP done in Turkish Walnut.
I feel an SOTD coming on...
