Custom 9/8 Translucent G10
Hey Guys,
Here is a custom that I just finished up.
9/8 Translucent G10
Yellow Solid Surface Spacer
Stainless Pins
O1 Precision Ground Steel/ Stock Elimination
"Mirror Finish" -- Been working on my mirror finishes lately. I can't call it perfect but it is certainly the best that I can do at my present level. Hopefully I can continue to improve with each razor. Little pixilation in my photos, guess I'll have to work on those too.
Feel free to let me know what you think?
Best Regards

Thanked: 469/8? O_O That's not a razor that's a meat cleaver!
Nice work, btw. Very nice.

Like the lines. Has a natural look to it like gentle waves. So how's it shave?

It is very nice. I like your eye for the lines and especially like the creative bits on the spine and behind the jimps. It looks like the mirror came out very clean.
I have some questions:
How does the wavy tang and scales feel while in stropping and honing holds?
When your thumb is tight in the thumb notch do you find that it inhibits your line of site to the heel of the blade?
In general could we see a picture of you holding the razor in standard shaving position?
Any particular reason why you set the pivot back as far as you did? I really like the look, but curious about how it will feel.
I ask because I really like it and am curious not to insult.

I think it's beautiful. I'd work out a way to hone it, strop it and shave with it if I had to use my feet. I'm already practicing that, but my face is a mess.

Beautiful work. The tang is different than I have seen. I suppose it seems ergonomic, but would really like to hold it! Awesome thing, for certain!
"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Hello, I do welcome and appreciate your feedback and inquiry. I designed a very similar blade/tang that I have been shaving with for about 6 months and found myself wanting to use it more often than not. It just fits good in my hand. Of course this is a matter of opinion and/or personal preference. While stropping and honing I tend to choke down on the tang to the first dip with for-finger and thumb (widest portion on the tang) and this feels like the natural position. I guess I would best describe it as "different" to strop and hone compared to a straight/er tang but not too different. There is no doubt however that some of these so called "creative" designs are just not for everyone. Obviously there is a reason the vast majority of razors made for hundreds of years were designed the way they are. Its just fun to push the limits sometimes.
Typically I design a razor on paper and cut it out in light 1/4" wood. This allows me to get a better idea of how it will feel in the hand and its general ergonomics. I also get a better idea of where I want the pivot pin. In this case the only reason that it was placed in its present location is comfort or the position while in my hand. It seems to allow for a variety of holds while shaving. I can back off the thumb notch a little or choke up into it while trimming around sideburns at the head with the tip. I do think that your line of site is inhibited a little when deep in the thumb notch although I personally do not find this to be a problem.
Thanks for the good feedback on the finish. It did come out on the very clean/shiny side but for the purest, not a true mirror (flawless in ANY light or angle) getting closer every razor.
Best Regards
