A quick update.
The long narrow part has been turned into a blade for a small kitchen knife. I am close to finishing the handle. That was hard than making the blade actually. I needed a couple of tries to make a one-piece handle. I never mad eknife handles before.
The big part is going to be a santoku, but because it was part of a cleaver, it was too thick for my taste. Rather than grind away a lot of steel, I decided to fire up my makeshift forge for the first time and hammer it flatter. At the same time this would also make it a bit longer.
The left blade is the santoku by the time I was finished hammering the steel. My forge did not get hot enough so I had to hammer quite a lot
The middle piece is a thick piece of O1 which I am hammering into a smiling wedge.
The right piece is a leftover part of some unknown steel. Something O1-ish. It was about 1/4 inch thick and 1/4 inch wide. I just hammered it flat so that I can make another small peeling knife out of it. Waste not want not.Last edited by Bruno; 10-01-2011 at 09:24 PM.

The small knife is finished. Making the handle was the hardest part. specifically, making a straight cut along the grain of the wood was challenging. The wood is teak, finished with a couple of layers of CA. I chose teak because it can handle moisture much better than other woods.
I am now grinding and sanding the big knife to prepare it for heat treatment. Now I also need to modify my forge to get it hot enough for heat treatment.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

i am impressed at what i am seeing... i never thought to expand restoration to a cleaver or other blades.
