Default Today's project, Circa 1830-1860 Ashton Jackson 8/8 Wedge

I picked up this little Gem Wednesday when I took a road trip out to Medina Ohio, Yep I stopped in to check out Imperial Shave and say hello to Don. Nice chair guys.....

On the way out of town I stopped into the Medina Antique Mall and found about 60 str8's but I have to many projects now so I decided on the nice beastie beauty. It says "Ashton Jackson Co. Improved Silver Stell". (yes Stell not Steel) a mistake when stamping?

Cleaned up the blade, (there was more pitting than first thought). As you can see I cleaned the tang but left some pitting as I wanted to keep the marking in tact and I wanted to leave some of its aged beauty to tell it's story.

The scales are made out of a Limited Addition Blue Twill Carbon Fiber and I choose Nickel Silver pins, SS washers and Brass spacers. I made the wedge from a piece of Kudu Horn.

Remember RT 18 Medina Antique Mall lots of str8's.

That looks great, as usual. Have you considered the possibility of making custom scales for members under "Member Services?"
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Great Job and a fantastic find on the 8/8 chopper. Like the shape of those scales.

    Best Regards

I like the scales. The material is really nice, and you did a nice job with them.

Your workmanship is great, I hope you don't mind a couple of critiques (this is JMO, of course - take it for what it's worth):
For this particular blade I wish you had used some kind of wood or horn. There is something wrong about a 150 year old blade dressed in modern material.
Also, it looks kind of odd to me to have that much curve in the scales with little to no curvature of the blade.

On a brand new custom blade with a huge smile, those scales would look awesome.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

I hear you for sure. I went round and round over that same thing. Funny I actually think you are correct. To me it's just a pin and poof, the blade is free for another set of scales. I might just go down to the shop before lunch tomorrow and change it out. I've got just the blade for these scales...or just the scales for this blade...Guess I'll know better tomorrow...

BTW, I like being critiqued......Good or bad its all about the quest....!

William Jackson & Co. was launched in about 1841 as Ashton, Jackson & Co., South Street, Sheffield, and styled as American merchants, cutlery and file manufacturers.
