Finally finished this up. Broke another set of Amboyna Burl scales just prior to this.. sad. anywho Macassar Ebony scales, brass pin and washer, amboyna burl scale with a nice Paul Fisher Square point seated great. Turned out nice.

Yup! I like adding the figured part in as often as possible! Gives it character! Thanks guys. I'll tell ya though I was surprised how hard this wood really was. Like stone. So dense it sinks!Quote:

Hell yes!!! but it does not smell as bad as the horn. BTW if anyone has smelled sanded amboyna burl you know how wonderful it is. I take my respirator off once in awhile just to smell it! If they make a soap with it i'm there! Glen you in here? Back me up on this!!!Quote:

thats for wood that is figured such as bubinga etc. a burl is just a growth in the wood. regular amboyna smells the same also! all wood has it's own smell when sanded. love it!!Quote:

Sweet looking razor! I started an ebony project recently and really like the look and feel of ebony. Too bad the material is so expensive or I'd try ebony on a few more razors. :-) Again, great work.

Thanks for the link. They seem to have a large selection and prices seem decent too. For example, it looks like a 1.5" X 1.5" X 6" piece of African blackwood is $8.50. That should be enough material for 2?? full sets of scales if your precise with the table saw. I noticed that they also sell thin stock that might be easier to work with. For example, a 1/8" X 3" X 24" piece of gaboon ebony is $30. Expensive, yes, but that should easily be enough material for 4 full sets of scales. I will call them to see if they might be able to produce the blackwood in thin stock which would presumably be less expensive than the gaboon. Thanks again for the link.Quote:

Interesting. How do you get up to 6 sets out of 1.5” X 1.5” X 6” piece? Your table saw skills must be far far better than mine. For six sets you’d need 12 pieces (12 @ 1.5” X 6”), right? If each piece starts at 1/8” before sanding, there’s only 12 possible slices and that’s before considering how much material is lost with each cut. You must be cutting the slices very thin or you have a very thin saw blade – or, most likely, your skills are in a completely different league than mine. :-) :-)Quote:
