Filarmonica in Horn
This is my first attempt at working with horn. I learned heaps, natural materials dont always play nice.
This one came with cracked bakelite scales. The blade has been ground heavily and as a result very thin at the edge. I haven't touched the blade, just cleaned and polished the tang...I will leave trying to hone this one up to the owner (Pauly)
Paul wanted to go for a 'art deco' style on the scales, and also wanted to keep the feathering of the horn prominant.
Pins are brass, washers are single #0 on the pivot and a triple stack on the wedge. Wedge is a red acrylic.
Anyway, thanks for looking.
Any feedback is appreciated.Last edited by Str8Raz0r; 09-12-2011 at 11:22 AM.

Those scales turned out really nice. I like the stair stepping of them. Good job.

Thanked: 94Thanks again Stu, very happy with the result.
What the photos don't show is just how hefty the razor is - it's a 7/8 with a thick and wide spine. So with the chunky art deco inspired design they work together very well.
The spacer is red clear acrylic, so when you get the light at the right angles it almost glows - also the red should hide blood stains quite well too.
I do like that the finish is satin - I personally find that if horn is too highly polished it starts to look like acrylic or epoxy resin so keeping the finish looking definitely natural is a big plus for the aesthetics.
