4th Generation Bengall
Last job for this year
Came in for honing but as it was a family heirloom it was decided a restore was in order. Only before pic I have is of the edge. Gives an idea of the condition when stored in a bathroom for extended time.
Otherwise, geometry was pristine. Beautiful straight spine & edge bevel with minimal wear. Like it had only been honed once. Great steel.
Was going to attempt a bevel set on my Asagi pre-polisher but some micro chips & the fact that the heel had not really been set in the past made me drop back for a little 2k Shapton action then onto the 5k, 12k & my 2 Asagi.
10 strokes on 0.5 diamond on felt then back to my finishing Asagi for 3 featherlight strokes on dry stone a la barber hone. Don't know exactly why this works yet but it seems to perfect the edge a lot of the time. Anyhoo still minimal hone wear & a superb shaver for a few more generations.
Last pic is with lens well away from edge. Always get nervous with honed edges & hard surfaces.Last edited by onimaru55; 12-25-2011 at 11:32 PM.
