I wouldnt recommend it , the wheel on the belt grinder side is smalled then the housing of the machine, I set a 1/16 deep hollow on each side with the stone wheel, then continued with the belt grinder taking all the material off one side to the CL, one pass at a time, dipping in water after each pass.
Then I did the other side, only i had to grind with the razor upside down (because of the housing interference)...
It was painfully slow (approx 1.5 hrs per side)
Im going to swap out the 5 inch contact wheel for an 8 inch ASAP, as well as add another 2 pullies to accept 72" belts ( limited availability in grits with 21")

Im going to incorperate (in the setup) the 5" wheel, an 8" wheel and a 6" wheel, and make them interchangable - ill make the factory tensioner and tracking dial work.

I assume my next blade will grind a lot easier, I plan on using 01 and sending it out for heat treatment, rather then grinding hardened steel and dipping in water after EVERY pass!!!

Oh yes, it shaves beautifully. I nicked the side of my mouth with it, nothing serious, I attribute it to the $hit eating grin on my face.

Thank you for the kind words.

PS: does anyone use a rheostat to slow their grinder down??
Good job, old file, I like it. You speak my language.

I made 2 razors with similar combo grinder/sander, paid only 50$ for mine. It's ok for beginners, but as you mentioned, wouldn't recommend it because there isn't enough space to work your blade on the contact wheel. And it’s hard to find good 28’’ belts, all the belts I tried did not good job grinding metal. I ended up grinding blades with the grinding wheel instead.

I wouldn’t recommend slowing down this grinder, or even upgrading it to accept 72’’ belts. It has too weak motor for that purpose, you will spend money and effort and you won’t be pleased with the result. Believe me, I’ve been there.

If money is an object, try to get one of this combo dry/wet grinders.

I’ve got mine for 35$. It’s not Metabo, but it does the job much better than the grinder/sander, and you don’t have to dip your blade on each run.

I considered this option in the beginning, however the cost of different grit grinding wheels, limited grit availability, and the thought of the wheel shrinking in diameter over time (causing a different size hollow). That being said, it likely would work a lot smoother for the initial grind.

    Wilton 2x72 Square Wheel Belt Sander/Grinder 1HP Motor 1PH
Here is a 2x72 with a 1 hp, my machine is listed as 1/4 hp, 3450 rpm, but its really a 1/2 hp 3000rpm.
For the amount of grinding I plan on doing on this unit (no more hardened steel) Im sure it will be ok.....
If the length of the belt make a difference on the strain of the motor (assuming the drive wheel is the same size, so should the rotation speed)?

I got a feeling that when guys build knives professionally, they use a lot of pressure and therefore require 1.5 -2hp.... little guy like me making little razors and , once in a blue moon should be ok with a 1/2 hp.

If I do run into problems, this is my plan b. There will be no wasted parts, ill transfer the system right over.

    Any thoughts ?

    Thanks!

Good job, glad it shaves well. O1 will be hard after HT, probably not quite as hard as your file though.

I have to say I'm a tad jealous of all you guys making your own razors. I believe I have the hands, just not the knowhow or equipment. I think buying a grinding wheel and a file might by in my near future, and I can only hope I can make something halfway decent. I applaud your efforts at making your own kamisori.
