In which aluminum begets iron. And plasma.
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the scales needed to be filled in at the toe pins. I procrastinated on doing that because sometimes I just hate working with epoxy.
The other day I finally got around to it.
Order of business #1, clean up the 'polishing rings' where the pins had been. Ensue much hand-polishing with the micromesh. Polish, polish, polish.
Polish, polish, slip! Hey, that hurt a bit, oh well, I banged my thumb with the end of the scales. I probably lost a little skin. No big deal.
Hey. That's bleeding kind of a lot.
I had been playing computer games that entail lots of 'decide/wait' while I polished, so I now wait until the next input is required to go clean the wound. This takes about 2 minutes, by which time my thumb has dripped enough blood to make a puddle in the palm of my hand.
So I go into the bathroom and rinse it off real good, though honestly, the way it's bleeding there's no doubt about anything untoward being stuck in the wound, except maybe some of those aluminum filings. So maybe I gave myself a fresh tattoo as well!
After rinsing, it continues to bleed really a lot.
Applying firm pressure, I go downstairs to laugh about this with my wife. She of course is initially alarmed, but I'm just laughing about it. I go back into the bathroom and let off and... it bleeds a bunch more. There's now a blood ring in the sink, and I'm still applying pressure. Sharon has been tasked with prepping a bandaid. And now? The running water, the fact that I'd been sitting for an hour or so, and I kinda need to go to the bathroom.
This is not a hands-off activity and both my hands are kind of occupied with this whole 'thumb artery' problem.
Normally I'd have just used CA, but the CA I use for DIY sutures is dried out and the other stuff I've got is definitely not the kind you want in a wound. After the bandaids are found, with Sharon's help, I get the thumb wrapped up and finally get some relief.
Here's a picture, after it was all cleaned up.
The wound, that is!
Doesn't look like much, I know. But two days later and it's still seeping a bit. Guess it was kinda deep.
But anyway, at the end of this ridiculousness, I had a neat razor.
I also used the opportunity to try out my new doming kit. First go is pretty good, but I think I can do better with more practice.
I go back and forth on whether I should give the aluminum a satin finish. The high polish looks great, but it collects scratches like I collect razors.
Stupidly, I didn't take pictures of the refinished wedge. It works great once I filled in the concavity of the scales with epoxy. I got clever and used epoxy-putty for the job. By the time I'd gotten one side fixed up, the lump of putty had cured so I used resin for the other side. That turned out to be useful, since I also filled in the oversize pin-hole on the wedge, then put it all together and drilled a new 1/16th hole. From there, I hammered and sanded and polished until it all fit nice and snug.
This was a really fun project. Blood and all!-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.
