Default Spike in leather (bad S&M title)

LOL, I hope you aren't expecting something kinky in this thread. I got a Spike razor in a package deal that's in rough shape so I sanded and smoothed out the tange and went straight to making some custom scales (I'll get back to restoring the blade later).
I have a bag full of leather scraps and I decided to make the scales for this one out of dark brown cow leather with white leather wedge and brass pins and washers.
I like the way they turned out, it was heavy leather that is holding it's shape very well. the blade centers awesome in the scales but if it didn't you wouldn't mess up the blade. Well here's the pics:

P.S. I used the original busted up scales as a template for the scale design.

Actually if it gets some water splashed on it, the leather will harden up even more and it will add interesting stains and coloration to the scales.
I obviously thought about this before I made them and thanks for bringing it up so I could explain my thinking on that.

Did you try sanding them into shape or what were your thoughts on that?

I have done other projects in leather and sanding it is risky. The original Spike scales weren't rounded so I figured I would keep in line with the original scales.

Trouble with leather is that it absorbs moisture from the air making rust a possibility.
Lacquering the leather first might be a solution.

I went ahead and treated the leather with lanolin to waterproof it. It made it a little darker too, it looks nice. The soaked in lanolin also gets on the blade when it is closed so it protects the steel as well. Double bonus!
I restored the blade tonight, she sharpened up great, I'll try her out in the morning.
