The Notchtastic Duo: Joseph Elliot Silver Steel restores
Here's where the story begins:
These two misfits. Both of them are in chewed up scales, both have bad hone wear (the one on the left isn't QUITE as bad as it looks, since it's designed as a tapering blade, but that doesn't mean it's not bad).
The double notch with the Philadelphia scales so inspired me that I decided to do both my Elliot Silver Steel razors up as nice as I could and make a presentation box for them. The box isn't done yet -- not even begun -- but the razors are near enough to done to show them off. Some of the work on the Philadelphia razor appears over in the Workshop.
I filled in all the holes with superglue and horn shavings, then I painted over it with India ink. Finally, I put on a full CA coat on both sets of scales. The blades are hand-sanded and polished with Micromesh. I'm getting better at this part, but man it's work.
Full res versions of the pictures are here.
Nothing quite like a batch of macro photos to really see all the spots you missed!
How often do you see two razors with five notches between them?-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.

The tapering blade has previously been honed. Needless to say it lost its sharp during the sanding.
I've been working on honing up the Philadelphia. It's a bear. Needs 4 layers of tape. But It's a doable thing.
Any time I'm restoring my razors, I always have the notion of eventually selling them floating around in the back of my head. Getting an edge on either of these two is enough of a pain in the sit-bones that I would never foist them on anyone.-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.
