Tale of two (well, three) Butchers
Great work by all here!
This has been an ongoing project for a friend. The idea was to restore/yet conserve 2 of them. I started with 3 big Butchers. The wedge had a broken-in-half scale which had been fixed eons ago with an iron nail. The other 2 had pieces broken off at the top. Donor bits were found and bevels made doing all epoxy/bakelite dust repairs and bug bite fixes with India ink dye job and a soak in Neetsfoot oil. Just enough original collars were good enough for the 2 candidates and the 2 best scale sets were retained. Light sanding and buffing were done. I really liked the patina separating the bevel from the hone wear on the old wedge, so I cold blued the middle of the blade and polished the rest. Since these will be users, I installed aluminum bushings in the pin holes and added brass spacers between the blades and scales. I made and annealed some brass pins and peened until those big collar holes were filled and they turned out quite tight! 2 layers of tape (make that 3!) got me a nice managable bevel on the wedge and the reground one was truly double ground by a master back in the day! Honed up nicely! The scales which were broken in half and the round pointed blade are "spoils". A future project for My rotation.
Kindof a fun project! Thanks for lookingLast edited by sharptonn; 06-03-2012 at 12:49 AM.

I didn't know you were about your business like this. I thought that you knew something about old carburators and rusty manifolds but this is amazing. Keep up the good work man. I am impressed with the time that you put in. I Have the same 3 razors in my collection. I might have to put you to work.

Well done! I've never attempted to re-attach a section of horn that has broken clean off at a pin - I always assumed that any repair would fail as soon as it was subject to pressure from a new pin. Glad to see its possible!
