Default 7/8 Dutch Rattler in Dovo white scales

This poor razor was in just horrible shape when I got it. Rust, pits, patina, you name it, this guy had it. The original scales were suffering cell rot horribly and had impacted the blade.

4 days of hand sanding could not remove all the spots and pits. 2 days on the buffers could not bring her all the way back. She is back to the point of being lovely again, and fully functional, not to mention a downright great shaver.

I wish I could have done more for her.

Originally the blade read: Dutch Rattler ALONE The tang reads: (something) Dorman & Co. and the other side has a feather with 'Trade Mark' under it.

Not much of that is left now, sadly.

It was an EBay buy, and wasn't cheap, it wasn't worth what it cost, but now it is. I can't tell you how many hours of labor total it took to get it back this far.

I've ordered a new set of scales for her, which I will pin on with some nice brass rod and washers, till then these will hold her nicely.

It got the full honing routine, and despite a slight twist to the blade, was fairly easy to hone to a great edge. The test shave was pure enjoyment after all the labor it took to get her to this point.

I have'nt seen many Dutch Rattler's around so this one feels like it has found a home now.

    Enjoy folks!!!

No, the only before pics were the EBay shots, which didn't really show the true condition. It was impossible to tell how bad it was until you held it in your hand. That's a great EBay trick to get them sold for more than they are worth. The pics made it look like it would be an easy restore, but alas, once I had it in hand and realized the depth of the pits and the damage to the tang and edge, it was already mine. Competition for a large razor is pretty fierce on the 'bay, if you know what I mean.

I should have taken some before pics once she was out of the scales (I should say the rotten bakelite or whatever it was she was in) showing the true scope of the damage, but I was too anxious to see if I could save it.

I'll tell you what, that hand sanding is getting to be too hard on this old boy. My arm and shoulder still hurts, hehehehe.

I just love Dovo white scales, they're just so clean looking, practical, lightweight.
They look almost medical in a sense, to me at least.
Mine's a Dovo innox 5/8 so it's a really plain high sheen blade as well, obviously with a round tip instead of the square.
I really like the end result there, it looks really great.
I bet it shaves a treat too.
    Nice work.
