Thread: Gilbert brothers in Black Horn

Finished this one last night and like the way the scales turned out - they are black horn and have polished up relly nicely although you can't see it. I used a new rotary sander for the first time which enables me to get a uniform thickness prior to hand sanding. Also I modified a door wedge so that I could get a true wedge shape instead of relying on hand/eye - this again seems to have worked well. I'm struggling to upload pictures at the moment so will add more late.

Beautiful razor, it's a great thing to see it go back on the line. Great job.

Another classic looking redo with just enough different touches on the scales to make it interesting and still pleasing. I will have to remember the door wedge idea for future use. That blade design and features a lovely too. Nicely conceived and put together. Just one question though, did you make or buy that stacked washer setup? Been looking to find some.

Great Job! I saw 2 of these blades a while back from a UK vendor. Is this one of those? Hard to miss that spine! Rare blade, for certain!

I hope I understand your question propertly - I used small and then larger(#00 I think) washers one on top of each other. They were bought in 100 quantities from Microfasteners and, even though it took a couple of weeks to ship to the UK it's well worth the wait as the quality is consistent. The problem in the UK is getting decent quality 3/16 nickel rod - some is very soft and bends too easily and some (like on this) is quite hard and does not polish up very well.

Yes you're right this is one of them. They were set at 5 minute intervals so I bid on the first one with broken scales and won it. I then assumed that the second one would go for a lot more as the scales were in good condition and looked to be ivory. It went fot £3 more than I paid - I could have kicked myself
