Default Ern 1720 antique store find, first hand sand.

Here is my most recent find. Biggest problem is the blade. Should I even the blade out or just restore it? Thoughts? Also has anyone ever used plaster or some method to cast old scales? These scales have a decorative crown and sword on them and I would like to remake them as I damaged the tip while unpinning it.

    Will post pics shortly.

If you plan on shaving with it the hook / frown has to go. I'm frankly amazed that the spine ware is so minimal given that hook. I would love to see this razor with just a minimal restore. Basically just hone it up.

Try this method Tutorial: Casting Resin Scales.

It is a beautiful razor. Wish I didn't have to deal with the blade but i hope to restore it to shave ready. I hear these razors are excellent to shave with!

Yeah it will take some major metal removal. I have a great mentor here in town along with a few other members here in town. I have seen a few videos on how to take off the metal as well. Otherwise I will take my time with other blades til I am ready to mess with this gem.

Unless you have a strong love affair with this particular Ern, I suggest putting it aside and finding one in better shape. Recasting scales, restoring and reshaping that blade...its really more trouble than its worth.

It is only more trouble than it is worth if you dont find the value in what you learn. Sometimes, for me anyway, the value is in what is gained in knowledge vrs a monetary figure. But then I enjoy the learning process more than most I think. That and being able to put an old beauty back into service. that alone is worth what ever time I choose to invest in a project. But as I said that is just me.
