1700s stubtail restoration (pic heavy)
Hi all, I posted about a stubtail with a strange mark a little while ago (http://straightrazorpalace.com/show-...wn-stubby.html). I took it apart to clean it and fix up a pivot scale and actually took some pictures this time.
Here's the pile side scale, with a big chip out of the pivot and a crack right through the hole (the end piece was basically hanging off), so it needed to be stabilized. Normally I would call this scale trashed, but these were so old and so straight that I had to try to fix it:
I cut a piece of horn from an old set of scales I had and marked it off:
Here it is compared to the scale:
I filed down the scale and filed the piece to match:
Here is a test fit:
And the backside of the scale
Superglued in place (I superglued over my sharpie line though ) It's not pretty, but it'll be functional:
Comparison of old to restored:
All the parts ready to go together:
It still looks a little off, so I might try filling in the replacement part with a little horn dust + superglue.
I'm always a little iffy about the extent of restoration on razors this old. I think this one came out tastefully though. Now I just have to drill the pivot, put it back together and hone it. More to come later.

Thanked: 114Nice. I can't tell from the photos whether or not your scales are long enough for this, but what I've done on a razor or two (not necessarily this old or cool though) is file down the wedge making room to slide the entire razor down 1/4th inch 1/2th inch and drilling a brand new pivot hole. Your method, though, is far less destructive and I like how it turned out. +1 on attempting to save the original scales.

Great job saving those scales!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.
