    Default Bellefontaine Deluxe

Bellefontaine Deluxe with custom black water buffalo horns and camel bone wedge. The blade had a lot of rust and pitting on the tang. The gold wash has been removed in the process (unfortunately). It had very old and used dark wood scales with strange flat pins. The horn scales have the same shape as the original ones.

    Beautiful work.
The scales look great, the wedge and the pinning are very nicely executed.
Shame to loose the gold wash, but sometimes you just cant avoid it.

How does it shave? I've just acquired an identical one, but with yellow plastic scales of some sort. I'm trying to figure out how to keep the gold wash if I can.

Fantastic looking razor, by the way!

Yes, Great job, esp on scales. Good save.

You know what is actually shaves very good. For the gold wash, I went off very fast, so I suggest not touching it if you want to keep it. Indeed it is very heartbreaking.

I've been doing a bit of reading on the forum on the subject of preserving the gold wash. Consensus seems to be that it is pretty much a temporary thing - something like a maker's label on a tool handle or a sticker. On the other hand, there do seem to be quite a few razors knocking about on eBay that have both significant hone wear and gold wash, so perhaps it is more durable after all.

I've seen it suggested that you can paint over it with nail polish and then polish around that. Not sure how that would go, I might try it.

This is my example of the same blade. Other than light tarnish and a spot of rust around the pivot, it's in pretty good condition. Minimal home wear. Interesting that the scales are different. I was going to take a similar approach to restoration - especially how impressive your results were! - but might try a more limited approach to save the gold, if I can

This razor is in pretty good condition, I am sure it will look very nice at the end. I love the fact that it comes from Montreal, where I live.

Good luck and send the pictures when you are done.

Edward beautiful razor!, but honestly im not surprised all the Albert Bellefontaine Montreal razors seems to be high quality, from Germany and France, lots of them with fancy scales, and goldwash.

Looking at some directory, you find that the "Parfumerie" opens its doors around 1916 on St-Denis street in Montreal, by 1920 its listed as perfume mnfr and barbers’ supplies.
