Default The Best I Ever Saw in Vintage Bone

    My comedy of errors.

As RAD had reared it head I got this one off ebay without asking the seller any questions. What could go wrong.

The Gold washed The Best U Ever Saw in bone scales turned out to be a poorly restored The Best I Ever Saw that had some pitting left, most of the tang stamp was almost gone. But after honing it was a good shaver so I figured I would just sand the blade back to 2k then polish. However I broke the scales near the pivot pin.

After cleaning the scales and letting them dry for a few days. Today I got some free time so I reinforced the scales with some polyester fabric. While repining I cracked the wedge end of the already damaged scale. Fortunately the reinforcement held and I was able to glue the scale back together.

After re-honing the shave went very well. It turned out to be a rather talkative razor. The scales turned out to be unusual to me. Instead of the wedge being a wedge it is just a spacer. The scales are beveled at the spacer to create the proper bowing.

    Before I broke it

I bet the pro restore guys have had similar experiences when they started out. I've cracked some scales myself. That hammer looks like it is a bit big for the job BTW. At least you got it shaving and nice save on the bone scales. Every time we make mistakes we have the option of learning a lesson and not repeating the same mistakes. Next time out I'll bet you won't repeat the scale cracking.
