Actually, they were sent to me already ripped. Whoever did it did a good job - I would have taken my time with it too...lol. There were a few rough spots and a couple slightly crooked areas, but, luckily I was able to flatten them out enough and still had enough material. Originally, I tried to use the thinnest, smallest piece covered in bark for one scale..and by the time I got it flattened out, to get through the bark would have just made the scale too thin for these razors, so, I couldn't use it. ;( So, the two sets came from the 2nd and 3rd slabs. The 4th slab, on the bottom of the stack, the owner allowed me to keep for a personal project! woohoo.
The nerve is visible in this slab, however, and I'm not sure how stable it will be. I'm definitely willing to give it a shot though.
No washers, due to wanting to keep the classic ivory scale look. As for polishing ivory, it is similar to horn / bone / etc. Belt sander 80 -> 120 ->180, wet hand sand 220 -> 400 -> 600, Buff with white rouge. It comes out beautiful.
Ivory is very wierd, when you wet sand, the material removed is insanely slippery. You have to constantly dip the scale + paper in clean water to remove it.

Great pair of custom restores, and Hippo ivory, I didn't even think of Hippo how does it compare to Elephant ivory or marine ivory? not that I've had the opportunity to work with either especially with the laws we have in the UK.
