    Default Warped Scales

My recent ebay purchase has arrived and it looks great. It sure is too good for me to practice on. I have struggled to find any information about this razor, but I do love the covers on the tang / tail and think its a keeper, if it shaves well of course.

It has got warped scales and the blade won't shut without catching the blade. I was wondering if any of the Aussie boys undertake restoration work of this nature?

    Here are some pics

Warped scales is usually a pretty easy fix.

Take a look in the classifieds or shoot one of the Aussie restorers a PM and I'm sure someone can fix her up for you.

Kev I have fixed several scales both plastic & horn without breaking them down just using an old credit card or similar cut into strips,
Place several layers of the strips between the blade & scales when closed,I usually have about 3 per side to force them out then place the whole razor in a sealed sandwich bag, place in a container of boiling water, until cooled should sort it out, you may want a couple of shots to get them spot on if you want
Make sure the bag is sealed so the blade doesn't get wet as it can stain or water mark your blade if boiling, but from the kettle will be plenty hot enough,
I have also used the hot water trick and manipulate them by hand while hot then put in cold water while you hold them to cool and reset them just use a layer or two of paper towel or something so you don't burn yourself while you hold them. A few seconds in hot water can make a big difference.

Sorry other option if as yours look they are bent outward use the same techniques but but some weight or a clamp on them to push them back down to the blade & close the gap into the cards
    See how you go

I agree with Substance, that you do not need break down the razor. I open the razor and stuff rolled paper towel between the scales. Then heat with a hair dryer and move paper till I get desired shape. Let the scales cool and they are usually good to go.

Another good way and I've taken out a few warped scales using this method and that's manipulating the scales with your hands while using a hair dryer on a hot setting.

I tried the hot water, old credit card trick and it has improved things but not solved the problem. The blade is still catching on one side if I don't close the razor carefully.

I will try the hot hair dryer method later.

Thanks for the advice so far

the hot water or hair dryer & hand manipulation should work, as it sounds like you have a bit of an offset to one side also once straight the is pivot you may need to do the card trick agin also
    cheers

See how you go[/QUOjust wanted to thank ya. I had already thought of the credit card and of adding heat to straighten out the scales on my Double Duck goldenedge. they had almost closed up. I cut up the card and put 3 pcs per side and used rig and wax paper when closed. after reading you remedy with the boiling water I gave it a try and it worked it was you doing it first that made up my mind to give it a try. SO THANKS
