    No need to cut through bone at the thigh or shoulder; cut through the soft tissue, cut the tendons and ligaments, and the joint will separate. Hope this post doesn't sound too grim.

    Least a big blade like a razor would be quicker than a scalpel. Cutting close to the joint wouldn't be too hard to bone it out. Wouldn't like to know the survival rate though. Spose if you were lucky you'd pass out pretty quickly.

    Ahhhh, or owwwwww. Painful no matter how you look at it. You would have thought that the medical profession would have come up with a better means of amputation from the time of the Civil War up to the Great War.

    It's an interesting thread. Shows the versatility of the tool we use and the creativity on the part of the person in the battlefield who amputated.
