Thanked: 1072Most common Razors in Oz
Ok, lets get this forum going. Thanks to Hoglahoo and SRP for thinking of us.
I was wondering what the most common razors were in Australia.
IME there seems to have been a lot of Bengalls and Invictas out here back in the day. I have in my collection 5 Bengalls and 3 Invictas (Both brands great shavers too.)
Anyone else have any thoughts?Last edited by baldy; 09-09-2010 at 01:38 AM.

I am the same. Bengalls and Invicta's. I read somewhere that the Bengall's were standard army issue thats why there are so many of them.
I have a razor that i bought about 18 years ago (new) that is branded Dorko. I have never been able to find out much about them apart for an unrelated post then said it was a company called Dorsett and sons company(based in Germany). Dont know if this was a pre-cursor company to Dovo or not, probably a pretty wild assumptions

Thanked: 1072Yep, closest I've come to finding a W&B was when I found a W&B box in an antique store. I got one from the U.S. though, I was working on it today. Keep your eyes on The Gallery should be there in the next few days. Its funny, they seem to have stacks of them over there in the U.S.
hendersr, Thats interesting about the army issue idea, that would explain alot.Last edited by baldy; 09-09-2010 at 02:06 PM.

A few thousand references in Oz Newspapers for Bengall razors.
Pretty ubiquitous I'd say

Just googled this
Bengall
Seems we're not alone. Post war Cadman exported 80-90% of their product to Australia, India , Japan & PolandThe white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Another razor you should find in Oz is the Gotta, tho less prolific than the Bengall.
I bought about 4 Gottas in the 80's.
They were about the same price as the Black Beauty strops. Around AUD $100.
They were sold wholesale from "Barbers Supply" in Rydalmere. They still exist & have moved to Belmore but I don't see any straights for sale on their webpage.
Gotta was one of the names that Dovo bought up as was Dorko ... I think. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 1587Yep, gotta agree on the Gottas! And the Bengalls of course.
You can also find Pumas, Joseph Rodgers (in fact, a lot of Sheffield manufacturers turn up in Aus), Torreys, and Bokers to name but a few.
I also know there is a Livi or two floating around, at least one Joe Chandler, and an Alex Jacques. lol!
