Camel hide strops?
You blokes have plenty of exotic animals there for making
leather strops. I'm sure that you use cow hide, horse hide,
and roo hide.
What's camel hide like?
Cheers and beers.

Thanked: 983I can't say I've ever tried it myself Paul. I'm going to have to talk to a cousin of mine who runs a 'Game' meat slaughter house and see if Camel is on his list of meat processing. From there I can find out who processes the hides, and try to get a hold of some to make a strop out of. If I can manage all that, I'll let you know.
It would seem a waste if camels aren't processed at a meatworks, considering that we shoot so many of them as feral animals, as well as sell them back to the Arabs that brought them here in the first place. Australia has the last remaining wild herds of Camel on the planet, and they are in plaque proportion.

Thanks, Mick
Thanks, Mick. I had heard that there were alot of
wild camels in the Alice Springs area, and that they
were considered to be "vermin".
As I told you, I've seen a saddle made from camel
hide, and I was just wondering how that leather
might work as strop material.
Cheers!

Thanked: 983I was talking to some of the western most members of my family today via Skype, and I put in the request to get some information about camel hide. I'm curious as to how it would work as a strop now, myself. If I have any luck sourcing some veg tanned camel hide, I'll make us a couple of strops to try out.
