Buffer Setup
Gentlemen.
After recognising that the long hours I have spent hand sanding and buffing contributed to mild carpal tunnel, I have decided to invest in a buffer setup.
Do any of you have any recommendations as to local vendors who may stock a suitable buffer along with buffing wheels and compounds?
Thank you all in advance for your advice.

Hi Mykel and Merry Christmas to ya.
I am using my bench grinder with a buffer spindle that I got from Bunnings.
I picked up a three piece buffer kit from Super Cheap that has 4" buffers and black emery, red rouge and white compound included. They are only very small pieces though.
You would need to stabilise the holes with super glue otherwise it may fray.
I also got two 6" buffing wheels at Bunnings with compound included (red and green IIRC)
Trade Tools Direct have a good selection of wheels and compounds too.
Just be careful using 6" wheels 'cause they build up heat in the blade pretty quickly.
I usually rest the blade on my index finger when buffing to keep a handle on the temperature of the blade and not use too much pressure.
I've also got some Tripoli and green buffing wax from endlessgreen on eBay.
There are not many greaseless compounds available in Australia (I've never used them) - here is a link

Hope you are having a great Christmas and that this information is of use to you.

I use one of these with the dry wheel & guard removed & a tapered spindle added. The slow wet wheel is quite handy too for heel & toe work
6" x 8" Wet and Dry Bench Grinder | eBay
Polish Up also sells looseleaf mops down to 50mm. I use those a lot.
As for compounds here's an Aussie maker with a huge range Contact Ferro Finishing Pty. Ltd.
This mob sell greaseless if you wanna pay the dollars http://www.shooters.com.au/search.as...less&GO=Go&sc=
I use grit glue & SiC powders on looseleaf mops. Go easy on the glue or you'll turn the mop into a grindstone.
Glue & Ferrofin products available here: Australian Industrial Abrasives :: Polishing accessories
I get SiC from lapidiary suppliers :Tumbling Grit and Abrasives
Very dusty in use so get a good face mask & shield as well. Good ventilation & /or air filtration is a must. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

I bought a Ryobi bench grinder off ebay and then a spindle kit from Caswells to convert it to a buffer. They also sell greaseless compounds, black emery, polishing compounds, buffing wheels etc etc. Their site has lots of good information on it.

Thanked: 4942Too bad Caswell doesn't have their 1100 rpm 3/4 hp buffer over there. It is my absolute work horse.
