Yep. you can make great explosives also we used to toss a handfull of carbide into the urinals at school,wait a minute,carefully toss a match and blow the urinal to bits and pieces.
Than there was the day we took out the entire chem lab with a 1 lb chunk of pure sodium nasty stuff that

Plastic soft drink bottle, couple inches water, fold in half, add small pieces of carbide, firmly screw lid on. Throw and wait.

Carbide and water mix = acetylene. Increased pressure + heat in bottle will reach critical and explode.
Generally frowned on by law enforcement (and the neighbours) depending on where you are doing such activities.
