    Default Hats

It has been a while since we had a serious thread about hats. Traveling and living in a warmer climate this summer I observed more light colored Fedoras than caps.
I’m hoping this is a trend.

A Hat, for the purpose of this thread, is NOT a cap, a six-pence, a beanie or anything knitted. A real hat has a brim all around. E.g. a Fedora, a Bowler, a Cowboy-hat etc.

The first hat I ever bought is a Stetson. I found this one in Seattle in 1987 and it is safe to say it has been in more rain than sun.

Here it is on a trip to Svalbard in 1999. I still have it and it still looks great.

My daily go to hats are Panamas (a tightly woven straw fedora) which by the way are generally made in Ecuador. The true convention for hat wear is straw hats until Labor Day and felt or fur fedoras in the Fall and Winter. However, the weather here in Florida seldom requires a hat to warm the head so I generally wear Panamas year round (although I do have a couple nice felt fedoras for rainy or cold days.)

This is one of the hats I inherited from my dad that passed away earlier this year. American hat company.

Serious hats?! Well if you'll excuse a little double up of photographs, the following are my 'serious' hats.

    Work hat.

Town hat until current work hat retires.

Daily hat that I know is not, under these guidelines considered to be a 'serious hat'.

Yeah I can't take the flat cap seriously when it hangs around with a young upstart lighter like that bic. Surely it should be a box of redheads or something, or an old Dunhill or ronson lighter, not a zippo, that's what everyone gets
Have to say that I favour the serious hats in order of decrepitude, obviously starting with the most senior, not that there is anything wrong with the newer two.

Well the work hat s definitely the senior of them all, but the Wedding hat comes next at 10 years old now, and still looks new (probably because it has been worn only a few times since ).

The Flat cap knows reliable and cost effective when it see's it, so is happy to hang around with a bic lighter, instead of those stuck up Dunhill and Ronson's and being a good workin' man hat that the flat cap is it is also happy to hang around with Redheads and Zippo's. It might also have something to do with both the hat and the pipe being Irish too. Nothing ostentatious or pretentious about the Irish .
