    Default Calling all Aussies.

So I am not Australian but my local grocer got some Vegemite in. I have never had it before. I bought some because I buy a lot of things on impulse…kinda how I got into straight razors. Well anyways I bought some and I am curious on what to eat it with. I haven't tried it yet.

you can eat it with anything (although opinions vary wildley), my grandfather even made us eat vegemite soup once (he was a cook in the navy during WWII so that was interesting to say the least).

try it on some toast with a little bit of butter (or similar), spread only just enough to see a change in colour (less is truely more untill you get a taste for it).

Well I finally got around to trying it. Definitely a strong taste. Way saltier than I thought I would be. On the first piece of bread I put too much. And the second I did it sparingly. It was much better but still intense. I must say the after taste is much better than the initial taste. Although I think if I were to be drinking some good beer with it I would enjoy it alot more. I will try it some more later. Is marmite pretty much the same thing as well?

marmites a different flavor again. more meaty than salty... sort of? I'm an import to australia so vegemite is an acquired cultural experience... of sorts. I prefer it on crackers with melted cheese, preferably cheddar. Lots of vitamin B in vegamite, and it works great on mouth cankers.

Yeah, its definitely grown on me. So far my favorite mix is a bagel with some cheddar and vegemite and maybe a little butter. I tried some marmite and I think you put it perfectly. It does have like a salted meat taste. I don't know which one I like better.

I actually prefer Marmite over Vegemite; I find Marmite sweeter. I like Vegemite (and Marmite) on toast (but I stopped eating bread a few months ago). Vegemite is good to flavour stews with. You'd find a LOT of Australians eat Vegemite on toast for breakfast. I even like eating it off the spoon every now and again...

I generally can't stand the stuff - the only time I might touch it is with a fried egg on toast, the combo seems to work ok.

Vegemite is an acquired taste to an imported pom like me. Best I heard was put some vegemite on a cracker then try to scrape it all off, what's left is enough.
