Try a step into mid-power (up to G motors). Aerotech has some nice performing kits for less than the price of a poor condition english wedge...
The easy road is rarely rewarding.

You should take your son to a club launch. Bring your ESTES rockets as we all have kids and they fly lots of ESTES rockets at these launches plus you get to see what the larger motors are all about. People are always very friendly at these launches. Even if it is a long drive they are worth it. Here are some in your general area of the country:
NIRA: Home
NIRA flies very close to you. They are a chapter of NAR (National Association of Rocketry)
The following link will take you to Tripoli, this is a different organization that also has Rocketry clubs. The two organizations offer the same benefits. The only difference between the two organizations is that Tripoli lets members build there own rocket motors IF they choose too. NAR does not allow that. Start off with a NIRA launch with the kids. The members of that club can probably tell you about some of the larger regional launches that occur once or twice per year. These you may need to drive longer for but will be worth it to see even larger rockets and many more flights in a day. Bring shade chairs and food and enjoy the show while your kids fly their rockets too.
U.S.A. Prefectures
Midwest Power is a launch that a lot of people drive a long ways to attend. Consider taking your kids to it.
