I'm not against burley pipe-smoking women, but if they introduce themselves as "Lola" I'm generally out of there.

If you have a choice you should avoid tobacco use of any kind and in any amount. For every story you hear of a 80 or 90 year old heavy lifetime smoker there is another younger person suffering from tobacco related cancer. When it is you that is diagnosed I guarantee that you will wish you choose a different recreational activity than smoking or chewing. You don't know your genetic predisposition well enough to know if you will be sensitive to tobacco related DNA damage or not. My work is basic research on oral cancers and it is a horrible disease whose treatment changes your quality of life more often than not - swallowing, speech and appearance and there is only a 50% survival rate still. Don't start - please!

    Hi folks,

I smoke a cigar on a weekend and drink some good quality whisky to complement it, like I say, one a week with a good scotch! That’s my treat, I have no intentions in starting smoking full time, and I just want that bit of luxury every now and then. I could eat fat free food, not drink, not smoke, go to church 3 times a week, then get hit by a bus on the way home. I try and live the best I can, everything in moderation.

That is nice if you can swing it. For some of us one is too many, and a thousand ain't enough.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

to the OP, I am 50, and i started smoking a pipe in the Spring of 2013, and I smoke 1-3 bowls per week, mostly on weekends when I can sit outside for an hour or so and relax. I do 4 mile runs 2-3 times per week with hills involved, I cycle 28-50+ miles per week, with some pretty good climbs, and I play full court basketball on Mondays, when I can (depends on my work load) for an hour with mostly college aged guys. I have not seen a change in my performance and I am still able to keep up with those younger players on the court, no kidding. And I really enjoy those 1-3 bowls per week.

I'm 81, gave up smoking at 70, have one double hard alcohol drink a week, got my A1c down to 5.6, modified my diet for more veggies, less red meat. Did all this to insure a long life filled with joy of family and friends (the few that still talk to me). But I will hunt down and kill anyone that tries to take that slice of chocolate cake away from me. Moderation has become my motto (as much as I used to like excess what can you do?).

Many years ago when I was prone to do such things, I trained for several triathlons and completed the Equinox Marathon in Fairbanks, Alaska (which is reputed to be the second hardest marathon in North America) all while dipping snuff quite heavily and smoking a pipe regularly. I would say, that neither snuff nor my pipes hindered athletic performance in any way. Although I often dipped snuff during my training runs, I wouldn't recommend smoking a pipe while actually engaged in athletic endeavors.
The older I get, the better I was
