The spinning movement winds the watch (as it's not moving on a persons wrist) and allows them to check for timing accuracy etc. while moving through different planes.
If you are a watch collector and want to avoid resetting the time & date on your automatic watches (that you aren't wearing) there are all sorts of choices for home....
Don't do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the paramedics!
