Default I let my pipe tobacco dry out.

I have a couple ounced of English pipe tobacco in a sealed, Tupperware like dish. I left it too long and it is now dry. What is the best way to reconstitute it? I sprinkled just a couple of drops of water on it, mixed it up and then resealed it. I have heard cut up pieces of potato or apple will do it. Any advice? Thanks.

A time you put any fruit into pipe tobacco you run the risk of mold. If you have a spray bottle that you can mist it with and then seal it back up for a day, you will be fine.

Newbie at straight razors but have been learning the pipe for the last 40 years.

Always used a slice of apple but that was in tobacco that I was using not storing.

I agree with that, if it's used within a few days, there's probably no issue. Had a friend who had to throw out a very expensive leather pouch (due to an apple slice) as once mold starts in it, you can clean it out but it is still there and will reappear at a later time. Same with any other container that has some porosity.

I always use a scrap of paper towel that has been splashed with distilled water and wrung out as much as possible. Let it sit a few days, check it and repeat as needed.

Yes, often just over night was enough to re hydrate the tobacco, then 86 the the fruit slice.

I fellow told me to load the pipe, light up and puff a bit. Condensation from the burning tobacco, and from your breath, will soon hydrate that bowl of tobacco enough for you to enjoy it. I've smoked many a bowl of dried up tobacco. Not dried up like powder, but dry.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I've used distilled water in a piece of sponge that I cut off a sponge for cleaning my car.... I push all the tobacco to the other side of the tin so none touches the sponge and let it sit a day and a half.... It was bone dry at first, turned to powder if you rolled it, after two days with the sponge, you'd never know that it wasn't a brand new tin.... tobacco was moist and resilient to the touch
