Good video. I am sure with your mechanical knowledge you will understand my point.

You shouldn't replace only one gear of a pair of gears. They wear together and form a pair. If you only replace half of the pair they try to match and that is many times negative.

    Just thinking out loud again!

I agree with you about the gears, and that marriage is sorta similar, we wear together, or we grind and destroy each other, har.
Realistically, i just wanted to know what the pin did exactly. Good to know the reverse ain’t synched as well.

Well, I’m sitting here thinking, how did I get this in the car as I plan removing the engine and transmission. Go back through the picture archive cause I have no memory any more and oh yeah. I put the engine in before I rebuilt the body..
Didn’t leave a zipper or nothin..
So need to figure a way to grab it by the head stud by the water outlet as well as the front timing bracket.

    She’s gonna be tight!.
I hate the idea of unloading only one head nut to install the lift bracket, but can’t really see anything else to connect to. I used the starter bolt hole on the install and thats too far set back now so I’d bend cowling if I tried to use that.
Ahh well. I’ll fabricate a steel plate at work tomorrow to fit under that stud, and get this a little closer. Love to have it out before we get more snow. Driveway is clear, but christmas is coming too my wife is stern to remind me.. hehehe.
    Focus focus..

Got my gaskets for the trans and took the halves to work and soaked them all day in the parts washer.
Glad I did cause that pin did crack the case.

Amazing the bearings and gears are ok. And I’m not sure if some proper metallized epoxy will work. Or maybe I’ll braze it it’s Blue Demon rod, more likely.
Hate the idea of trying to weld an aluminum case.
Gonna clean up the crack and assess it from there.

Wow! I suppose there is always a reason it is out of the car. That reason sucks.
Seems the pin took a ride stuck between 2 teeth of the gear. That is what caused the lengthways damage on the pin. It looks a bit structural there.

Might find a mig guy and dig a bit/weld. Is the pin a detent for the side movement of reverse?
I wonder how it could fall out?
Perhaps not put together properly? Good prep and welds should fix that?

Is that the bottom, side, or the top?

A leak would be relatively easy to stop but if it hit that hard would it change the alignment of the for lack of better term at the moment "bearing holes"?

I would be wondering if you could take it back or not.

Seeing as how I’m doing an engine tear down as well it just makes sense to remove them as one unit.
With the front removed it seems easier to just go out as one vs jacking it up really hi and lying on my back.

    I do love BMW’s too,
