Thread: In the Garden 2019

I finally got the batteries to my camera charged so I got a picture of part of my mushroom garden.

I took this a few days ago--another couple of days with this weather and I can have my first bite. Don't worry there's only ONE that is this far along--

Doing well here so far
Got the other Tomato starts in, went with as close as I can come to San Marzano style for sauces
I actually bought ONE Golden Plum Tomato plant for Garden munching hehehe

Found some really fragrant Basil to plant too

Got just enough room left for maybe one row of Pumpkins for the Shan

And Noah kept telling the Rabbits--Only Two! Only Two!

And that's what I got out of my little patch today--



And they are very sweet, moist and delicious--

After the debacle that was our garden last year, we've decided to keep it simple this time around. We had a really nice patch of garlic come up when the snow finally disappeared, and to that we've added some peppers, onion, radish, carrots, pumpkin, squash, cucumber, some sunflowers just because they look great and (I'm really looking forward to this part) strawberries! I hope they turn out half as nice as yours!

I was driving by my first wife and husband's place and she was out working in the garden and stopped to chat (no worries as we've stayed friends during the divorce and all the years later).

While we were visiting I had to marvel at her strawberry patch.

Square footage is probably only a bit larger than mine but it's packed full of plants! I've struggled with mine to expand but at least mine are ever-bearing so they keep putting out fruit for quite some time.

When I'm on my summer rides on the Harley my son takes care of the yard but I can't seem to get him to just pick the ripe ones, rinse them. Pat them dry then put on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and put it in the chest freezer so I can use them later. Oh well it could be much worse as he's a really good kid, doesn't do drugs and holds a good paying steady job with opportunities for advancement and full benefits.

I also got some Roma tomato plants put in a few days ago.



I probably could have put them in a couple of weeks ago but I'm glad I didn't as three of my ex wife's tomato plants had been hit by frost and died the week before/I don't know why the one looked untouched.

Our backyard is kinda big. Today I'll be spreading and mixing in 40 yards of compost into a newly opened 3/8 acre plot for winter squash and potatoes.

Low tunnels will be moving over to the new plot. Garlic is looking good. Nursery is full of starts and the tomatoes are going in the cold tunnel. I'm not well aquainted with the crop plan, but I'm pretty sure it's carrots, beets, lettuce starts, radish, kale and snap peas. I'm still pretty tied to the desk with they day gig, but do most field/bed prep.

Infrastructure wise, we're changing up our wash station and needing to finish up a 10'x10' walk in cooler.

This is our 6th season doing mixed market vegetable production and our 3rd year at significant scale. We received our organic certification earlier this year after one year in transition. I'll march around the field and put up some pics later.

Adding to my post, I'm not much of a grower, so seeing these post of all you setting up, adapting to and managing your growing seasons is very cool to me.

Well "The Shan" got her wish the other day and I put in one row of Pumpkins from SEED
LOL, to be honest, I am hoping the damn creeping things don't make it, but inevitably they will take over the whole garden

Ours are in raised beds, so when the vines start creeping, they get chucked over the edge on to the lawn. Good excuse not to mow that bit.
