Bowls and boxes have been my thing lately. Here are a few I just finished up out of Spalted sugar maple. One with a captive ring and one with dyed grain both a first for me.
Very nice work. They look great.
Very nice!!
I haven't learned to turn a bowl well yet. Someday...
Brushes and spindle type turnings are the norm if I turn at all.
We all started with the basics. For bowl turning it does take different gouges that are stronger. And possibly some scrapers, depending on how you go about it. The price of good tools can get spendy for sure. Not counting the sharpening station you need to have to keep your tools sharp. I do have a couple of skews but I get along with the gouge better most of the time. I find watching a few guys on Youtube has helped me to understand better.
Ya, I have the gouges (bowl) but could use a radiused scraper though.
I have a Tormmek for grinding turning tools, chisels, and plane blades. I've got the sharp thing down after 30 years as a licensed Carpenter.
I've tried rudamentory turning of small bowls from green lumber but I have alot to learn.
I love watching Richard Raffin turn anything. Like any skilled tradesman he makes it look effortless!!
This is about what I'm finding too. Unless you are extremely light on the scraper. Still, a sharp gouge seems to cut smoother.
Here is another Pen and a Salt Mill from today's work. I had another pen but I made it too thin. It got crushed while I was pressing it together. My fault. I should have been watching bother ends not just one.

The wood for the salt mill was repurposed wood. We had a cheap couch replaced yesterday. I saved the wood feet from it as I had a feeling they had to be some kind of hardwood. I just had to take the screw out of them and square them up. Not I have four 5 x 5 x 4 pieces. I will make the matching Pepper Mill out of this too but will stain it darker.
No idea what wood it is.
BTW, @MikeB52 and @RezDog
Yes, These are still part of the stuff I got from you, Mike and Shaun. Thanks to both of you. But I'm about to run out so you can send the next box. LOL.
Lol,, and Movember is just around the corner too!
Could be new builders boxes available.
Great job on the kits you’ve produced so far Jerry!
