Nice work-Is that 1st set desert ironwood? It sure looks like it!
Tom, he still posts some on Instagram. I've told him we miss him over here. But I totally get the appeal of (and am on) Instagram-and I don't even do social media for the most part. But there is an amazing turning community there. I learn a lot from following some of them and watching their videos. Some straight razor types on there too.
Okay, having turned a few dozen now, I'm getting seriously tired of pens, and I think I've just about funded the Maggards' next boat payment in shaving brush knots alone, so what else to do?
Why, bowls, of course!
So I was texting Gasman Jerry that I sharpened my 1st bowl gouge on the 180 CBN wheel with the jig today-he's always several steps ahead of me on this turning business. I just knew I'd flub it hopelessly, but it was surprisingly easy after watching a couple of videos. Of course the sharpie is great for sharpening turning tools too. I got a bunch of blanks from Cook Woods (from whom I've bought a good bit of wood-highly recommended!), including this nice 4x4x3 English Walnut blank, secured against the G3 jaws with a worm screw chuck:

I got it round without too much trouble:

I'm thinking either a shaving bowl to match some of my walnut razors, or a little dish for mints or change. I guess now that I've posted an in-progress pic, I better not screw it up, eh? :nono:
looks like you need to invest in a nice band saw to rough out your bowl blanks Aaron! Looking forward to seeing the end result.
A guy can’t have too many nice wood bowls. That is a beautiful piece of wood, and I’m sure it will be a beautiful bowl.
I was on vacation in Hawaii one time, and got to take in the annual wood workers guild show. There was amazing and inspiring pieces of all descriptions. Being as that I don’t really turn, I was in awe of the turnings. The nesting bowls cut from one pice of wood really struck me. I think you can turn for a long time without running out of projects.
Shawn-Since you were in Hawaii, I'm sure some of the wood was koa, which I'm sure you know can be quite beautiful. I haven't done anything with it (yet). The longer I work with wood, the more I love walnut, and since my neighbor and son are local arborists, I've got a steady supply coming in. My drying area is filling up rapidly since they know what to look for now-believe me, I'm not complaining!
And Vern, I hear you on sawing off the corners of a square blank. I actually have a bandsaw. Sometimes I just like roughing a blank to round-for some reason I get a kick out of that more than almost any other turning task. (Yeah, I'm weird).
Here are pics of a shaving bowl I turned earlier this year out of a piece of Cherry Burl and sent to a fellow member in Austria. I think I'm going to let my hands rest and heal a bit and turn myself a shaving bowl out of the rest of that piece of Cherry Burl.
I made this one for a long handled shaving brush made from 6 pieces of Walnut.
