Thanked: 4207Lovely lamp, nice shading and fade through where you got the mushroom cap so thin as well.

Anyone have an opinion on the grind/angle for negative rake scrapers?
Ive been dabbling with them and find them to be a nice addition to my tools. It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 420725’ top, and 40’ bottom angle works for me.
Efficiency of resharpening mostly.
Set the top angle about 3/16 wide, then I just maintain the bottom angle in use till I almost run out of top curl, then redo.
Looks like this, and to me, just feels steadier in hand with the cutting edge high on the tool.

Ive been using 25 and 40 but a lot more centered than what you have going, Mike. So I have a lot of bevel on the 25 side.
The 40/40 sounds smart. No need for a left and right ground tool. Just flip it over and make a burr.
And that brings up another question. The burr. I see guys online putting the tool on the grinder with the 40 angle down so your touching up the 40/bottom. With the grinder rotating in the downward direction, aren't you making more of a burr on the wrong end of the bottom edge? Its like you would need the grinder rotating the opposite direction to bring "up" a burr in the right position. Help me to understand better please. It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 4207If you just resharpen the bottom angle only Jerry, eventually your tool will look more like the one in my pic, and you can tell me if it behaves more predictably then.
As far as direction to sharpen, i too go tip up against the rotating wheel. If you maintain parallelism, you will get the burr along the tip, even as you do get a bit along the bottom of the bevel as well. Seems counterintuitive to razor honing, but it works.
Also get a slight convening of the bevel from the wheel itself, since mines only a 6” diamond wheel.
The burr is slight, but all you need for lovely shavings.."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

Seems counterintuitive to razor honing.....
I guess this is why it doesn't make much sense to me. Thanks for agreeing with my thoughts. At least I know I'm not thinking wrong.
But as you said it does get a burr. I know it does by the shavings it puts out. And boy does it! I took a few of my first set of lathe tools that don't get used. They were scrapers. I reground them into Neg Rake Scrapers. What a difference that made. I'd love to get a real set someday but for now, this will do just fine. It really helped when I was trying to cut a sharp corner in the bottom of these lidded boxes I've been doing.
Thanks for the info. Both of you. It's just Sharpening, right?
